Well, this was all very strange, but also all very wonderful. Just getting to this gig in central Athens meant checking the ‘Athens riot status’ IPod app (yes there really is one) to make sure the little skirmish earlier in the evening at Syntagma square had cooled off enough to let us in. Then you have to find a parking space!! Thankfully this all went rather smoothly, however, this was the last thing that seemed to go to plan.

The beginning half hour or so of this gig was quite possibly some of the most powerful Fall I have ever heard. The two drums assaulting the senses so violently that Darren’s kit literally fell to pieces after about two songs. MES looks very well and Elana full of smiles as she blew kisses to relatives in the balcony above my head. It’s all ticking along rather wonderfully until around the end of Mister Rode I think when MES does his usual wonder off stage. Nothing to worry about here as he always returns?

Not this time.

So that was it for Mark. The rest of the set becomes a bit of a mish-mash where the band in Elana hold things together, sharing the vocal duties with Darren Garratt in just his second Fall gig since his debut in Cologne last December. I don’t think it takes a genius to see this wasn’t at all planned, but I have to hand it to the troops, they kept rocking for just short of an hour in total without the boss, delivering a fantastic Amorator which never appeared on the original paper set list.

Highlight without a doubt is Mister Rode. Hanley/Burns eat your heart out.

You must grab this one for the double drums alone. The set survives without Smith, so don’t let that put you off. The Fall might well be Mark and his granny on bongos, but if Smith fucks off, those fuckers left bash the guitars and bongos are still very much The Fall.

Huge huge thanks to my wonderful host Kostas Loukidis for allowing me into his wonderful family and home. Your hospitality in times of national difficulty is humbling. I must now return the compliment. You must sample some real fish and chips and binge drinking. We don't currently tear gas out citizens just yet, but hurry up mate. It won't be long now.

All in all, fantastic Fall. They are still by far the best band in the world. With or without Mr Grumpy.

^επικό επος. Vic μια ώρα και 10 λεπτά, ωραιότατοι με τον νέο κλαρινιτζή να το ζει πολύ περισσότερο από τον προηγούμενο, με Σώτο να στήνει χορό επι σκηνής γύρω από την μπαντα. Μόδια σχεδόν 2ωρο σετ, εμφάνιση που εστάζε κάβλα ως συνήθως, με τα νέα κομμάτια να ακούγονται πιο ψωμομένα live απ' ότι στο cd, και κοινό jam/κλείσιμο μαζί με VIC. Γενικά από τις πιο καβλωτικές συναυλιακές εμπειρίες του τελευταίου χρόνου.

Και πέρυσι τον Μάη που είχαν έρθει εδώ οι 1000mods ήμουν Αθήνα και σήμερα που παίζουν εδώ θα είμαι Αθήνα. Ευτυχώς που άνοιξαν για graveyard και είδα κι εγώ.

Πώς λέγεται το ωραιότατο instrumental krautίζον κομμάτι που έπαιξαν οι Mods λίγο πριν τη λήξη;

ΣΕ ΕΙΔΑ χτες στο ΑΝ, όπως κοιτάς την σκήνη, στην αριστερή πλευρά, ψηλά πάνω στα σκαλιά, ήταν δύο γυναίκες με γυαλία στραβωμάρας, η μία ήσουν εσύ και κάπνιζες ψυχεδελικά τσιγάρο. Μου χτύπησες ευχάριστα στο μάτι (και δεν ήμουν και πιωμένος).

Α, και μπάντα χτες τα' σπάσε, το Δάνη το' χει πάει πράγματι σε άλλο επίπεδο, χαιρόσουν να τον ακούς, γενικά η μπάντα κάνει βήμα δύσκολο με πιο rock oriented in-your-face κομμάτια και βγάζει μάτι ότι δεν είναι εύκολη δουλεία να κολυμπάς έξω από τα (ριφ-μπουλντόζα) νερά σου, αλλά το πήγανε τζιτζι!

Επίσης το ΑΝ τους είναι πια μικρό, end of story... και στο κάτω-κάτω είμαστε και γέροι άνθρωποι, κυριλέ κοτούλες, δεν γίνεται να μην έχει χώρο να καβατζώθουμε και να χτυπηθούμε γαλαρία γεροντίστικα. Τα Μόδια έχουν πλέον στάνταρ posse νεολαία που σκάει κάγκελο για τρέλες, οι μεταλλάδες τι θα κάνουμε... όλοι παρέα δεν γένεν.
