What sounds like a simple love song gains power from its apparently effortless synthesis of argument and anticipation. The first six lines, relying on statements that will countenance no contradiction, dissolve into a prediction of the longevity of this love. Remarkably, the imagery of the seas drying up and the rocks melting in the sun is a prophecy that has gained scientific authority since the song was written. Astronomers estimate that, some six billion years from now, the sun's core will have exhausted its hydrogen and begin to burn helium, converting it into carbon and oxygen. Simultaneously the sun's atmopsphere will expand to one hundred times its present size as the sun becomes a red giant. Life on earth will be obliterated by the swollen sun which will boil away the oceans and melt the continents.
It is an astonishing love that measures its life against the ability of the earth to endure.

The final quatrain is equally intense though it looks back to an indigenous tradition rather than forward to the destiny of the planet. What is meant by the promise to 'come again' is a determination to defeat death by spiritual means. In the Scottish tradition, as witness ballads like 'Sweet William's Ghost' (included in Allan Ramsay's Tea-Table Miscellany, 1750), lovers return to their sweethearts after death, especially after dying at some distance from Scotland: Sweet William says his bones are buried 'A far beyond the sea'. There is, then, the hint that the singer who compares his love to a red rose expects to die far from his native land. Whenever he dies, and however distant it is, he will 'come again'. Seldom has so much meaning been packed into a sixteen-line lyric.
