The squad of 19 will travel to Serbia under experienced NRL and Intrust Super Premiership coach Steve Georgallis, playing two games in the Balkan Cup tournament. The tournament will feature national sides from Serbia, Greece, Bosnia and either Turkey or Bulgaria.
Georgallis declared this “truly a great day for Greek Rugby League.”
“When we first started way back in 2003 we dreamed about our end goal being a Greek Rugby League International team being selected from players that live in Greece and play in the Greek Rugby League domestic competition,” the 206-game former Eastern Suburbs, Western Suburbs and Wests Tigers utility told
Commentary Box Sports.
“Now 14 years later it is a reality. I still can’t believe it is going to happen.
“It has not been easy with a lot of obstacles thrown our way, but we now can say that this is truly a great day for Greek Rugby League in Greece.
“All those in Greece who have sacrificed a lot to make this happen should be so proud of this achievement.”
Georgallis, currently in the midst of an ISP finals campaign with his Canterbury Bulldogs side, believes the entire 19-man squad will perform well in Serbia, singling out two experienced players he expects will provide the leadership.
“I am looking forward to Nikos Bosmos controlling the game at half and Stefanos Bastas leading the forwards in this team, and to see how their experience of being in the international team for the last four years can transfer to them being leaders of this team.”
