Summerskiss Records announces the Afghan Whigs tribute album project. Slated for release in 2007, submissions are being accepted now.
Founded in 1986, the Afghan Whigs put Cincinnati on the alternative music map with their R&B influenced rock and roll. Greg Dulli’s darkly introspective lyrics and the band’s talented roster of musicians got the band signed to Seattle’s Sub Pop label alongside Nirvana, Mudhoney and the most influential acts of the era. The Whigs moved to Elektra records after three releases at Sub Pop, including the album of soul covers, Uptown Avondale. At Elektra, their sound became even more developed and dependent upon Rick McCollum’s slide guitar prose and John Curley’s melodic bass lines. The videos for “Gentlemen” and “Debonair” received regular airplay on MTV and alternative radio. Following the fan favorite 1996 release Black Love, the Afghan Whigs moved to Columbia and recorded what would be their final album, 1965. 1965 found the band with a more upbeat sound, especially in the singles “Somethin’ Hot” and “66.”
Throughout their career, the Afghan Whigs played with many talented musicians, on stage and in the studio. Shawn Smith (Brad, Satchel), Susan Marshall, Steve Myers (Mighty Fine), Happy Chichester (Howlin’ Maggie), Alex Chilton (Big Star) and numerous guest players expanded the band into a large extended family. That family also carried over into the Whigs’ devoted fan base. Many of these fans were inspired by the Whigs to start their own bands.
Summerskiss Records is proud to produce the first Afghan Whigs tribute album. Songs will be contributed from friends and colleagues of the Whigs as well as up-and-coming bands influenced by their sound. Submissions are being accepted through October 30. The tracklisting will be announced in December, and the album will be available in early 2007. For more information on the project, visit the Summerskiss Records website.
